My husband was out on a training bike ride when I got the phone call that changed our lives. The ER nurse told me that my husband had been struck by a truck that morning. He had been knocked unconscious and one leg was mangled. They acted to save his leg, and I rushed to the hospital.

This was the start of dealing with his hospitalization, multiple surgeries, physical therapy, modifying our home, taking leave from my full time job to care for John, complications from surgeries, medications, equipment, and watching my spouse battle pain and depression as he fought to re-learn to walk. Bills piled up- shocking medical bills to the tune of hundreds of thousands in addition to our normal household expenses.
